Birthing Pod is a relic item in UnderMine.
It absorbs all HP restored and gives the Peasant a secondary familiar when it hatches after absorbing 500 HP. The HP absorbed is not effected by blessings, curses or hexes. The familiar will always be one the peasant already owns after hatching from Griswold, except for Pale Likeness. Obtaining another Birthing Pod will reset the health required, and hatching it will replace the secondary familiar with another at random. It is possible to change which familiar hatches by resetting the floor and restoring the required HP.
If the peasant sleeps in a Tent, the Birthing Pod does not take the HP restored, and the Peasant will be healed as normal.
When a player does not have Griswold unlocked, the familiar hatched from birthing pod will be Firebird. Despite having a second familiar it will still show as undiscovered in the journal.
