Crawl Space
A Crawl Space is a room that is accessed via a staircase that lead down from the main floor of a given level.
These staircases are almost never directly obvious to a player besides a couple of special cases and are usually found under rocks.
These staircases are usually referred to as crawlspaces (a term that apparently came into usage through the game Binding of Issac)[1] or rarely as "Oubliettes"[2]. The game code references these rooms as Hidden Rooms.
There is only one hidden crawl space under a rock per floor and it cannot spawn under rocks containing gold or in rocks located in secret rooms. Very rarely, another crawl space may spawn per floor in Othermine spawning a secret pilfer market in the second crawl space.
How to find Crawl Spaces
The main way that players tend to find Crawl Space is by destroying rocks. These rocks can be broken by many different methods but the basic method is to use bomb to explode specific rocks, but a more advanced method involves using enemies with explosive attacks, like when finding Secret Rooms:
Troll Bombardier
Ogre Bombardier
Ogre Annihilator
Ogre Firestarter
Land Mine
Ticker
Poison Mine
Unstable Barrel
Unstable Crystal
Bomb Pilfer
Bobo
Throwbo
Lurker
Crypt Lurker
Sand Skulker
Gargoyle
Texture Clues
It is possible to tell what rock on a floor contains the crawlspace. There are two clues to look for, but the basic fact to remember is that crawlspaces cause the hit box of the rock on top of it to move slightly to the north.
1. When the crawlspace is under a rock next to the north wall it will show as shifted down further than normal to make room for that hit box change
2. When the rock is anywhere else you can tell by how close your player model can get to the rock, if you can get really close its not a crawl space, crawlspaces force the player to star about an 1/8 of a tile further away than the normal rock do.
These images will help to see what is meant, the first has a crawlspace under it, and the second one doesn't:
Types of Crawl Spaces
The Crawl Spaces lead to a hidden room that may house blessings, curses, or other treasure.
